Welcome to the first of six scavenger hunts I will be hosting over the course of my residency with the City of Waterloo. If you don’t know about them yet, check out the intro video here. I’m looking forward to collaborating with you and seeing what you create!

Scavenger Hunt 1 launch date: 13 July 2021

Where to submit your work: Online through this form or in person at the Waterloo Visitor Centre.

The Challenge

The theme this week is Waterloo as a creative, collaborative, and innovative city. I wanted to start with this topic as this project, and my practice, is rooted in collaboration. It’s also a great introduction to the series, as it helps us to think about how everyone has the capacity for creativity. You might not be good at drawing, but you might be brilliant at observing details, having a strong imagination, or have a mind for building and understanding three dimensional forms. Innovation is about looking at what we have and thinking about what it could become. We’re going to be innovative with our use of materials in these challenges, using the materials we have on hand to create or making one media work for us in different ways.

Show us how you are creative, collaborative, and innovative by visiting a park or trail around Waterloo, then creating something visual which answers the question “What is this space for?” Maybe it’s for play, or exercise, or a home for insects — you decide! The weather forecast might be a bit wet, but you can use that to inspire your work. Try to get outside, experience our parks and trails, then go home and create something. Don’t forget to tell us where you went!

I’ve written another post here with ideas about how you can use different materials you might have around. Remember that I will be using these submissions to create collages, so they don’t necessarily need to look like conventional “finished” artworks.

If you have questions for me, you can send them to cultureplan@waterloo.ca.

Good luck and happy creating!

— Lucy

Inspiration

You can’t be bored of nature, can you? You’ve endless subjects in nature. Endless.
— David Hockney

The Van Gogh Museum has a brilliant interview with British artist David Hockney, where he talks about the work of Vincent Van Gogh but also what it means to look at the natural spaces around us, and to create from them. Watch it here.
